A Parent’s Worst Nightmare: Gwinnett County 2-Year-Old Drowns In Above-Ground Swimming Pool At Daycare Provider’s Home

Our Atlanta lawyers see many cases involving avoidable death and serious injury to innocent children. A recent report out of Gwinnett County is another unfortunate example. Yesterday, Gwinnett County police were called to the scene of a drowning involving 2-year-old child in Buford, Georgia. Gwinnett County police identified the victim as Abiola Bankolemoh. The tragedy occurred at about 2:50 p.m. Thursday in the 3700 block of Bradford Walk Trail N.E. in Buford.

According to news reports, the child was unresponsive when medical personnel arrived. The daycare provided stated that the child had fallen into her above-ground swimming pool.

Police said the care taker, Tanga Sheri Moon, 34, ran a day care center for several children at her home. Investigators said there were four children, ranging from 2 to 9 years old, under Moon's care at the time of the incident. It is not known at this time whether Moon was legally licensed or required to be licensed to care for the children left in her care and custody on a daily basis.

Moon and her husband, Shawn Moon, 36, were charged with two counts of cruelty to children in the 2nd degree and one count of reckless conduct. They were taken to the Gwinnett County Detention Center. The couple's five children were placed in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services

Authorities report that Moon told them that she left the room temporarily where the children were playing to use the bathroom. Moon found the child lying at the bottom of the pool. She jumped in, pulled Bankolemoh out and began CPR. EMS continued CPR when they arrived and while transporting Bankolemoh to Gwinnett Medical Center. Life saving measures were continued at the hospital, but were ultimately unsuccessful. The child was pronounced deceased.
